Northern Connecticut Girls' Softball League
2003 SEASON SUMMARY
The Northern Connecticut Girls' Softball League welcomed East Hartford, Granby, Mansfield and Marlborough in 2003, increasing the number of member towns to twenty.
More teams were entered in the U-14 league than in U-16 for the first time in the league's existence. East Hartford, East Windsor, Manchester Red, Marlborough and West Hartford were added while Simsbury did not return from 2002. A record 202 players were registered among the twelve teams. Enfield took home the regular season trophies and Manchester Blue were victors in the U-14 tournament, defeating Enfield 8-6 in an exciting final game.
The U-16 division had 150 players comprising the two 5-team divisions, down from the twelve teams entered in 2002. Enfield, Granby and Mansfield were added while Bloomfield, Bolton, Ellington, Stafford and Tolland did not return from the previous season. Vernon and Simsbury won their respective divisions and Vernon bested Somers 6-0 in the U-16 tournament final.
Overall, NCGSL had a net gain of one team with player registration increasing to 352, up from 322 in 2002. Enfield, Somers, South Windsor, Vernon and West Hartford were among the five member towns with teams entered in both age groups.

The 2003 U-14 Co-M.V.P.s, selected by the U-14 coaches, are Mallory Householder, Ellington (left) and Kim Collins, Enfield (right). The other nominees honored by their teammates and coaches were: Abigail Rodriguez (East Hartford), Meagan Nelson (East Windsor), Katie Viara (Manchester Blue), Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester Red Devils), Rosie Boudreau (Marlborough), Mindy Oswell (Somers), Jacquie O'Brien (South Windsor), Taylor Bartini (Suffield), Hannah Koch (Vernon) and Rebecca Demers (West Hartford).
Erika Trotta, Enfield (right) was elected 2003 U-16 M.V.P. by the U-16 coaches. Congratulations to the other players nominated: Lisa Caruso (Granby), Brittany Christensen (Hebron), Aubrey Desjarlais (Mansfield), Becca Raymond (Simsbury), Katie Skypek (Somers), Kathy Marulanda (South Windsor), Mary Gordon (Vernon), Alix Raymond (West Hartford) and Caylee Johanson (Windsor).

- U-16
Week 1 (6/29): Kyleen Klement, Enfield. Powered Enfield to wins over Windsor and Granby with a triple, three doubles and two singles.

Week 2 (7/6): Mary Gordon, Vernon. Pitched a no-hitter (19K) at Granby and a two-hitter (10K) at Simsbury to give Vernon a 2-0 start.
Week 3 (7/13): Becca Raymond, Simsbury. Pitched U-16's second no-hitter in a 17-2 win over West Hartford, striking out 14.
Week 4 (7/20): Kristina Gordon, Simsbury. Pitched a 5-inning perfect game versus Mansfield and a 3-hitter against Enfield, striking out a total of 24 opponents.
Week 5 (7/27): Alyssa Cannella and Sarah Wenz, Enfield. Together propelled the offense in Enfield's wins over Somers, Mansfield and South Windsor.
Week 6 (8/3): Mary Gordon, Vernon. Pitched Vernon to a 3-0 week, including two shutouts, allowing only one run and recording a total of 43 strikeouts.
Week 7 (8/7): Becca Raymond, Simsbury. (right) Pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts over Windsor to capture first place in the West division on the final night of the regular season.
- U-14
Weeks 1 & 2 (6/29): Mallory Householder and Emily Savino, Ellington. Pitched Ellington to a 4-0 start with wins over East Hartford, West Hartford, Somers and Marlborough.

Week 3 (7/6): Katie Viara, Manchester Blue. Pitched a complete game win, striking out 14, over Ellington to put Manchester Blue into a first-place tie.
Week 4 (7/13): Meagan Nelson, East Windsor recorded 28 strikeouts in leading East to wins over Marlborough and Somers and Jacquie O'Brien, South Windsor pitched U-14's second no-hitter and led a strong defensive effort in the win over Enfield.
Week 5 (7/20): Kim Collins, Enfield. Recorded 26 strikeouts in leading Enfield to wins over East Hartford and Manchester Blue.
Week 6 (7/27): Hannah Koch, Vernon. (right) Had seven hits in Vernon's wins over Granby, Suffield and West Hartford.
Week 7 (8/1): Ashley Bilodeau, Manchester Red Devils. Had several key hits and pitched well in Red Devils' 2-1 week.

The 2003 summer season featured 27 players participating in their final year of ASA U-16 eligibility. The league directors and coaches extend their best wishes and appreciation to them and their families in making the league a success.
