The Northern Connecticut Girls' Softball League
2012 SEASON SUMMARY
In 2012, NCGSL's 15th season, the league changed national governing bodies from ASA to USSSA. This afforded the league access to new opportunities at Fastpitch Nation's indoor facility in Bloomfield as well as to a bonafide multi-field softball complex in East Hartford to host the season-ending tournaments.
NCGSL decreased in size from 36 teams in 2011 to 29 teams, partly due to the restructuring of the age divisions to High School and Middle School. An 11U division was added for the younger players. The summer league totaled 424 players registered from the 15 active member towns. Eight towns (Coventry, Enfield, Glastonbury, Hebron, Northwest, Vernon, West Hartford and Windsor) entered teams in both High School and Middle School divisions.
Four teams and 57 players were entered in the 11U division, which played an abbreviated season due to conflicts with Little League. Enfield finished with an 8-1 record to win the regular season, and also won their tournament by defeating Glastonbury 16-10 in the final game.
The Middle School Division had 155 players on eleven teams. Vernon (10-2) and Windsor (12-0) won their respective divisions. At the season-ending tournament August 11-12th at the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Club fields in East Hartford, Vernon defeated Windsor 5-0 in the championship game.
The High School Division had fourteen teams with 212 registered players. Vernon (East) and Windsor (West) won their divisions with identical 12-2 records. Simsbury edged Windsor 1-0 in the final game to win their tournament held at the PWAC complex in East Hartford.
The league All-Star games were played on Saturday, August 18th at Welch Park in Windsor. The West All-Stars prevailed over their East counterparts in the Middle School game by a score of 7-4. In the nightcap, the West High School All-Stars defeated the East 2-1 in one of the best-played all-star games ever.
The U-14 Fall League had four teams with nine additional players registered. The four teams each hosted Saturday games and Granby won a season-ending playoff weekend held at Brainard Park in Enfield.
