2000 U-16 SEASON GAME SUMMARIES

Monday, June 26th
Suffield 11, Somers 5. Suffield won its first game as Deedee Presser tripled and had 4 RBI. Marisa Packard also hit well. Sharon Woronecki earned the pitching win. Somers was led by Ashley Mazzoli's pitching and Katie Skypek's two hits.
Ellington 7, Stafford 0. Jess Cosman struck out 15 batters while allowing only two hits as Ellington opened with a win at home. Tara Heffernan and Christine Frank each did well behind the plate. D.J.Manfre made a spectacular sliding catch of a line drive hit to shallow left field and Mallory Householder had an RBI single to help Ellington's offense. Nikole Skoglund and Britney Church pitched well for Stafford and Amanda Litvinchyk also had a good game.
Vernon 18, Hebron 4. Vernon and Hebron stayed close until Catherine Carter plated three Vernon runs with a bases-clearing triple in the third inning. Shannon Clancy doubled among three hits and Kate Nelson took the pitching decision. Hebron's Allison Theilig pitched well in the loss. Lindsay Christensen led the offense with two hits and Stephanie Smith had a good game at shortstop.
South Windsor 8, Enfield 6. South Windsor opened with a road win over Enfield 8-6. Jess Oliva was the winning pitcher and Ashley Killingbeck recorded the save and also hit a triple. Melissa Beane also had a three-base hit. Sarah Szotak pitched well in the loss and was well supported by the defense of catcher Amanda Michaud. Stephanie Montville had a triple for Enfield.
Wednesday, June 28th
Suffield 1, Ellington 0. Suffield edged Ellington 1-0 in an outstanding pitching duel between Suffield's Sharon Woronecki and Jessica Cosman of Ellington. Each limited the opposition to one hit and both defenses excelled. The lone run was scored by Kristy Orr, who drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Susan Ansman and Mary MacKinnon both made key plays in the outfield and Sharon Woronecki had Suffield's only hit. For Ellington, Cristin Chambers made an outstanding catch in center field and Leanne Golden and Michelle Dunn, who had Ellington's hit, also played well.
Somers 16, Stafford 11. Somers evened its record with a road win over Stafford. Katie Skypek went 4 for 4 at the plate and drove in two runs. Brianne Nyquist had 2 RBI and Noreen Kelly had a good game on defense. Erica Norcross and Kristy Beebe both doubled and walked for Stafford.
Vernon 3, Enfield 1. Vernon improved to 2-0 with a close win over visiting Enfield. Shannon Clancy reached base three times and Sandy Luz twice. Tawny Boulanger led the defense. Annie Tarbox pitched well in the loss. Kristi Fiore and Carrie Reynolds both had hits for Enfield.
South Windsor 16, Hebron 3. South kept pace with division rival Vernon with a 16-3 win over the Hebron Express. Amanda Boileau was the winning pitcher. Maureen Gamache topped the offense with three hits, including a homerun. Danielle Spiro added two hits. Allison Theilig took the loss for Hebron, which received a good defensive effort from Danielle Dupont.
Wednesday, July 5th
Enfield 9, Suffield 8. Enfield won its first game by handing Suffield its first loss in a close game 9-8. Clare Rubino knocked in three runs and Rachel Tautic also hit well for the winners. Stephanie Montville pitched well in relief. For Suffield, Caitlin Woods and Emily Allen had good games in the field and also combined for five hits on offense. Amy Defocie took the loss after a fine effort on the mound.
Ellington 7, Vernon 2. Jessica Cosman pitched a no-hitter, striking out 13, as Ellington defeated Vernon in a divisional contest. Kim Gambacorta made a nice catch of a line drive between first and second base to kill a rally. Courtney Metsch hit a two-run double and Alyssa Skewes had a fielder's choice RBI after fouling off several tough pitches from Vernon's Lauren Person. Person pitched nearly flawlessly in relief and scored both Vernon runs. Sandy Luz reached base twice and Tawny Boulanger and Melissa DeBarge led the defense.
South Windsor 10, Somers 1. South improved to 3-0 and took sole possession of first place in the South Division with a win at Somers. Ashley Killingbeck won the decision, striking out nine in six innings. Nora Belardinelli and Megan Jones fueled the offense with three hits apiece. Somers' Ashley Mazzoli took the loss, pitching a complete game. Katie Skypek had one of Somers' three hits and also played well defensively.
Stafford 7, Hebron 6. Stafford recorded their first win at Hebron as winning pitcher Marcie Boldi had nine strikeouts and also played great defense. Amanda Syme tripled and scored. Kelly Gardner and Brittany Christensen each hit doubles for Hebron and Laura McDonnell had a good game defensively at first base.
Friday, July 7th
Hebron 15, Ellington 8. The Hebron Express rolled to its first win, derailing Ellington by a score of 15 to 8. Winning pitcher Allison Theilig helped her own cause with two hits and an RBI. Lindsay Christensen and Penelope Cadigan each collected two hits and scored two runs. Daisy Scarlato and Ashley Gioia had two hits apiece for Ellington. Karyn Deptula had a hit and an RBI for the visitors.
Somers 2, Enfield 1. In the nightcap of a U-14/U-16 twinbill, homestanding Somers came out on top in a tight pitching and defensive duel. Somers took advantage of some Enfield miscues to take an early 2-1 lead and then hung on to post the victory behind a fine complete game pitching effort by Ashley Mazzoli. Michelle Pac threw out two pivotal basestealing attempts from behind the plate to head the defense. Sarah Szotak led Enfield with a superb complete game pitching performance. Annie Tarbox and Stephanie Montville offered up some defense in the infield and Amanda Michaud remained solid behind the plate for Enfield.
Suffield 14, South Windsor 4. Suffield broke open a 5-4 game in the fifth inning and defeated host South Windsor 14-4 under the lights at Rye Street Park. Sharon Woronecki went the distance and picked up the win. Moira Cahill and Deedee Presser each had two hits and drove in two runs for Suffield. Caitlin Woods had two RBI and pegged a runner at the plate from right field. Cassie Donnelly played an outstanding game behind the plate with three put-outs. Jess Oliva pitched well for South. Amanda Boileau and Amanda Karagianis each had two hits and Melissa Beane had a hit, scored a run and had a good game on defense.
Vernon 5, Stafford 4. Michelle Reichert pitched Vernon past Stafford by a 5-4 score. Tawny Boulanger stole three bases and scored twice and Shannon Clancy had three hits and 2 RBI. Danielle Deschamps had a key hit to start a 3-run rally in the sixth inning. Kristy Beebe scored twice for Stafford. Stephanie Kelley reached base twice and Amanda Syme played well in the field.
Monday, July 10th
Enfield 7, Hebron 6. Stephanie Montville picked up the win as Enfield sidetracked the Express. Lindsey Flanigan was the hitting star, clubbing a homerun and driving in two runs. Clare Rubino anchored the defense. For Hebron, Allison Clark, Megan Aldridge and Emma Rathbun all played well on both offense and defense.
Stafford 3, Suffield 2. Marcie Boldi struck out eight as Stafford upended visiting Suffield. Stephanie Kelley had a 2-run double and Erica Norcross turned back the opposition with several good defensive plays. Sharon Woronecki took the pitching loss, striking out ten batters. Susan Ansman doubled and Cassie Donnelly played well on defense.
Ellington 10, Somers 7. Pitchers Jess Cosman and Daisy Scarlato combined for the win and 13 strikeouts. Scarlato also hit a 2-run triple. Courtney Metsch and Kelly Wilson hit timely singles and Christine Frank led an aggressive baserunning effort. Mallory Householder made a nice catch in the outfield. Lindsay Post and Sarah Hills each scored twice for Somers. Noreen Kelly and Beth Palmer both performed well in the field.
Vernon 6, South Windsor 5. Michelle Reichert pitched six scoreless innings and hit a 2-run homer that would prove to be the game-winner as Vernon led, fell behind, rallied and then hung on to win at South Windsor. Tawny Boulanger scored two runs and played solid defense, as did Jessica Call. South's Ashley Killingbeck took the loss, fanning ten batters. Melissa Beane and Stacy Collins each had a pair of hits.
Wednesday, July 12th
Enfield 18, Ellington 7. Enfield won at home, topping Ellington 18-7. Catcher Sparky Michaud stoked the offense with a double, triple and 3 RBI. Carrie Reynolds and Amanda Turbide also tripled. Daisy Scarlato scored three of Ellington's runs and Kim Gambacorta tripled in a run. Kelly Wilson and Ashley Gioia played well in the field for the visitors.
Stafford 10, South Windsor 7. Stafford evened their record and handed South their third straight loss with a 10-7 win. Amanda Syme starred at the plate, knocking in a pair of runs and Kristy Beebe played a great game at shortstop. For South Windsor, Amanda Boileau and Kelly Niederwerfer did well at the plate.
Somers 10, Hebron 7. Somers edged Hebron by a score of 10-7. Lindsay Post tripled and Ashley Mazzoli doubled to lead the attack. Allison Theilig hit a double for Hebron and Lindsay Christensen paced the defense.
Vernon 5, Suffield 2. Vernon won its third straight game and completed a sweep of the night's contests by home teams. Melissa DeBarge clocked a 2-run homer for the winners and Cat Carter and Kate Boutwell led the defense. Sharon Woronecki took the loss, striking out ten. Emily Allen tripled and scored twice and Deedee Presser had two hits for Suffield.
Monday July 17th
Ellington 3, Suffield 2. Ellington and Suffield met for the second time and again the game was decided by one run, with Ellington avenging a previous 1-0 loss at Suffield. Jess Cosman and Daisy Scarlato combined to pitch the win. Cristin Chambers and Sara Hodgdon led a strong Ellington defense, each with a nice catch in the field. Alyssa Skewes had the pivotal hit, singling home two of the three runs. For Suffield, Sharon Woronecki struck out nine in another good pitching performance. Kristy Goulding went 2 for 3 and knocked in both Suffield runs and Mary Rose Adams also had two hits.
Somers 5, Stafford 4 (8 innings). Somers needed an extra inning to edge division rival Stafford by a score of 5-4. Katie Skypek drove in the deciding run. Sarah Hills recorded 10 strikeouts and Michelle Pac had a solid game at catcher and went 3 for 4 at the plate. Kristy Beebe homered for Stafford and catcher Stacey Beebe had a good game defensively.
Enfield 15, Vernon 7. Annie Tarbox pitched Enfield over Vernon to secure a tie for first place in the North Division and also to tighten the standings in the South Division. Amanda Turbide had a double and two RBI and Rachel Tautic carried the defense. For Vernon, Michelle Reichert tripled and Shannon Nelson belted a 2-run double. Jessica Call played well in the field.
South Windsor 8, Hebron 1. Jess Oliva was the winning pitcher as South derailed the Express. Danielle Spiro hit a double and walked twice and Stacy Collins had a big RBI single. Allison Theilig pitched well and had one of Hebron's hits. Laura McDonnell also had a hit and had a good game in the field.
Wednesday, July 19th
Enfield 7, South Windsor 2. Sara Szotak pitched an excellant game as Enfield won a tough game on the road. Annie Tarbox and Clare Rubino both hit 2-run doubles. South Windsor got two hits each from Jess Oliva and Megan Jones.
Ellington 7, Stafford 5. Ellington finally broke through and gained a win on the road at Stafoord behind another good pitching effort from the dou of Jessica Cosman and Daisy Scarlato, who combined for 11 strikeouts. Cosman helped her own cause by driving in two runs with a double and Scarlato reached base four times. Chris Frank scored three runs and Robin Tripp had an RBI single. Defensively, Ellington played a strong game all over the field. Tara Heffernan and Daisy Scarlato were in the middle of two double plays to help hold down the potent Stafford offense. Melissa Morrison played well in the field for Stafford and Amanda Litvinchyk reached base twice, knocking in a pair of runs with a double.
Vernon 18, Hebron 3. Vernon defeated Hebron to remain on top of the South Division. Kellie Nelson was the winning pitcher and also reached base three times. Shannon Miller scored two runs and Shannon Nelson played well on defense. Hebron's defense was led by Lindsay Christensen, Alex West and Kelly Gardner.
Suffield 4, Somers 3 (8 innings). Host Suffield edged Somers 4-3 in extra innings. Ashley Mazzoli took the loss for Somers, striking out six, walking three and allowing ten hits. Sharon Woronecki notched the win for Suffield, striking out seven, walking four and yielding nine hits. For Somers, Michelle Pac went 3 for 4 with a double, Brianne Nyquist was 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs and Noreen Kelly played well defensively. For Suffield, Moira Cahill went 2 for 4 with the game-winning RBI, Britney Hinckley was 2 for 2 and Emily Allen had a double. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Cassie Donnelly got a base hit, Mary Rose Adams walked as a result of catcher interference, Sharon Woronecki reached with a swinging bunt and Moira Cahill drove in Donnelly for the deciding run.
Friday, July 21st
Enfield 7, Stafford 2. Stephanie Montville pitched an excellant game as Enfield won its fifth straight game. Amanda Turbide drove in three runs with a double and two singles to power the offense. Erica Norcross played well on both offense and defense for Stafford. Catcher Stacey Beebe had a good game behind the plate.
South Windsor 7, Ellington 3. Jess Oliva pitched five innings of 1-hit softball as South prevailed in a divisional game. Liz Harrison went 2 for 3 at the plate and Amanda Karagianis hit a big RBI double in a 3-run fifth inning. Karyn Deptula had a 2-run double for Ellington. Kim Gambacorta and Daisy Scarlato had two hits apiece and Chris Frank doubled. Margaret Deptula played well on defense and Courtney Metsch made two nice catches in the outfield.
Vernon 3, Somers 1. Vernon split a U-14/U-16 twinbill at Somers by taking the nightcap 3-1. Sherri Gandini had a pair of hits for the winners. Shannon Miller and Leighann Caron both had good games in the field for Vernon. Ashley Mazzoli pitched well for Somers in the loss and Brianne Nyquist had a good night at the plate.
Suffield 19, Hebron 2. Suffield notched a solid win on the road against Hebron in a game shortened to 5 innings. Amy Defocie pitched the complete game 2-hitter, striking out two and walking one. Moira Cahill went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Emily Allen made a diving shoestring catch and went 2 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Allison Theilig struck out seven Suffield batters in a losing effort. She and Lindsay Christensen accounted for the two Express hits. Stephanie Houghton played well defensively.
Monday, July 24th
Hebron 3, Stafford 1. The Hebron Express derailed Stafford as Allison Theilig achieved a personal best by fanning 17 batters. The visitors scored all of their runs in the top of the seventh inning with Danielle Dupont, Allyssa Eisenberg and Alex West crossing the plate. Marcie Boldi pitched very well in the loss and Amanda Syme had a good night at the plate for Stafford.
Suffield 15, Enfield 4. Host Suffield interrupted Enfield's 5-game winning streak with a 15-4 decision. Sharon Woronecki, who went 2 for 3 at the plate, and Amy Defocie combined to pitch a 3-hitter. Kate Zuraw went 2 for 3, including a triple, and drove in 4 runs. Deedee Presser was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and Mary MacKinnon went 1 for 3. Clare Rubino led Enfield with a pair of hits and good defense. Amanda Michaud also had a hit and Kristy Farnan played well in the field.
Somers 11, South Windsor 10. Visiting Somers edged South as Sarah Hills pitched a great game and helped herself by knocking in two runs. Beth Palmer doubled and walked twice. Sarabeth Thorne had a good game in the field. Nora Belardinelli and Kelly Niederwerfer each had two hits for South Windsor.
Vernon 7, Ellington 0. Vernon won by forfeit.

All games postponed due to rain.

Monday, July 31st
Vernon 9, South Windsor 4. Vernon beat visiting South Windsor and clinched first place in the South Division. Shannon Clancy had two hits and Shannon Miller made a nice diving catch in the field. Shannon Nelson scored two runs and turned a double play. Kelly Niederwerfer and Danielle Spiro starred for South.
Enfield 15, Hebron 11. Enfield defeated Hebron as Amanda Turbide drove in four runs with three hits. Sarah Szotak had a double and 2 RBI and Kristi Fiore hit a 2-run single. Danielle Dupont pitched well in relief for Hebron. Stacey Griffin played well in left field and Lindsay Christensen also had a good game on defense.
Somers 8, Ellington 6. Ashley Mazzoli struck out eight and earned the win as Somers won at home. Michelle Pac drove in a pair of runs and Ashley Martin played well on defense. Daisy Scarlato scored two runs for Ellington. Kelly Wilson and Karyn Deptula had good games in the field.
Stafford at Suffield. Postponed due to rain; rescheduled to Tuesday, August 8th.
Wednesday, August 2nd
Somers 8, Hebron 7. Somers edged the Express to win their third straight game. Beth Palmer had the hot bat, going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI. Lindsay Post and Katrina Leno carried Somers' defense. Danielle Dupont pitched well but took the loss for Hebron. Jill Mangan belted a homerun and Emma Rathbun had a good defensive game.
South Windsor 14, Stafford 4. Jess Oliva scattered four hits in pitching South Windsor past Stafford. Stacy Collins crushed a grand slam homerun and Danielle Spiro went 2 for 3. For Stafford, Amanda Syme had a hit and two walks and Stephanie Kelley played well in the field.
Vernon 11, Suffield 5. Vernon extended their win streak to five games as Lauren Person pitched six strong innings, allowing three hits and fanning 13 batters. She also helped herself at the plate with a triple and a double. Sandra Luz had 2 hits and Leighann Caron scored two runs and also played well on defense. Sharon Woronecki pitched well for Suffield and also reached base twice. Kate Zuraw added a hit and Marisa Packard had a good game on defense.
Enfield at Ellington. Postponed due to rain; rescheduled to Friday, August 4th.
Friday, August 4th
Enfield 14, Ellington 1. (from 8/2) Annie Tarbox struck out 15 as Enfield won on the road. Amanda Turbide went 3 for 4 with 5 RBI and two home runs, one a grand slam. Carrie Reynolds contributed two hits. Kim Gambacorta pitched well in the loss. Margaret Deptula hit a double for Ellington and Karyn Deptula had an RBI single.
Monday, August 7th
Suffield 16, Hebron 1. Suffield bested the visiting Express 16-1 in a five-inning game. Sharon Woronecki pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight, and helped herself at the plate going 2 for 2 with a double and 3 RBIs. Jessica Doane went 1 for 1 and played well defensively. Deedee Presser went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs. For Hebron, Lindsay Christensen walked, stole second and scored on the Express's only hit by Jill Mangan. Allie Clark played well in the field.
South Windsor 17, Ellington 2. South Windsor also beat their visiting opponents in five innings, by a score of 17-2. Jess Oliva pitched four innings, striking out nine. Amanda Boileau fanned two batters in her inning of relief and had 3 hits and 3 runs scored on offense. Mo Gamache also had 3 hits, including a double, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Daisy Scarlato hit a solo homerun for Ellington. Christine Frank and Robin Tripp had good games on defense.
Enfield 9, Stafford 5. Sarah Szotak was the winning pitcher as Enfield edged Stafford. Clare Rubino and Kristi Fiore each had a pair of hits to pace the offense. Michelle Syphers delivered a 3-run double for Stafford and Amanda Syme played well defensively.
Vernon 23, Somers 5. Vernon defeated Somers in another five-inning game. Tawny Boulanger scored three runs. Mary Gordon had an RBI single and two runs scored. Kellie Nelson earned the pitching win. Noreen Kelly led Somers' offense with two hits. Crista Maggio and Brianne Nyquist had good games overall.
Tuesday, August 8th
Stafford 15, Suffield 15. (from 7/31) Suffield and visiting Stafford played to a 15-15 tie in a game called due to darkness in the bottom of the 7th inning. Moira Cahill pitched well for Suffield and went 1 for 3 at the plate and scored two runs. Cassie Donnelly had two hits and played well on defense. Marisa Packard added a hit and scored three runs. Stafford's Jessi Zeigler also pitched a good game. Tori Butler hit a 2-run double and Stephanie Kelley had a good night in the field.
Wednesday, August 9th
Ellington 15, Hebron 0. (from 7/26) Ellington won its final regular season game at home, 15-0 over the Hebron Express, behind a strong pitching effort from Daisy Scarlato who threw a one-hitter and struck out four. Her performance was supported by consistently strong play from the entire defense. Karyn Deptula, Margaret Deptula and Amy Tripp led the Ellington offense and Chris Frank again demonstrated smart aggressive baserunning to secure the win. For Hebron, Megan Aldridge had the lone hit on offense. Lindsay and Brittany Christensen played well defensively for the Express.
Enfield 17, Somers 3. Enfield defeated Somers and won the North Division with a record of 10-4. Annie Tarbox pitched the win, striking out 13 batters. She also had a triple with 2 RBIs at the plate. Lindsey Flanigan hit a double and Kristy Farnan had a good game in the field. Somers' Katrina Leno led their offense with a double. Noreen Kelly and Casey Pac played well overall.
Suffield 15, South Windsor 7. (from 7/26) Suffield beat visiting South to conclude their regular seasons. Mary MacKinnon led the winners going 2 for 2 with a triple and 4 RBIs at the plate and also making a nice running catch in the outfield and doubling the baserunner off first base. Emily Allen also had a hot bat, finishing with a double, a triple and four runs driven in. Britney Hinckley added two hits for Suffield. Amanda Boileau had a double among three hits for South Windsor. Jess Oliva pitched well in the loss and went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Thursday, August 10th
Stafford 7, Vernon 7. (from 7/26) The last game of the U-16 regular season ended in a 7-7 tie as Vernon played in Stafford's second straight stalemate. Vernon's Mary Gordon threw three no-hit innings of relief in her U-16 pitching debut and also scored two runs on offense. Tawny Boulanger led the defense, recoding eight putouts. Michelle Reichert tripled and singled and also pitched well. Amy Zimmerman had two hits for Stafford and Kristy Beebe made several key defensive plays in this close contest.
