2009 U-16 SCHEDULE and GAME SUMMARIES

Monday, June 15th
Simsbury 5, Granby 1. Due to excellant field maintenance by home team Granby's parents, the opening NCGSL game went on. Katie Kelleher, starting pitcher for Granby, retired all nine batters she faced and scored the lone Granby run on a bunt single by Sam Arnone in the 6th inning. Simsbury pitchers Annie Graikowski, Carly Williams, Jessie Rocha and Alie Garry shared the innings, striking out nine and allowing four hits. Stephanie Williams got the bats going for Simsbury with a shot to centerfield, followed by Sara Tully's double and solid hits by Christa Fagone and Emily Forzono, who also scored two of the five Simsbury runs.
Somers at Tolland - rescheduled to Thursday, July 30th.
Ellington at Vernon - rescheduled to Friday, July 17th.
West Hartford at Glastonbury - rescheduled to Monday, July 20th.
Enfield at Ashford - postponed by rain to a later date.
Wednesday, June 17th
South Windsor 7, West Hartford 0. South Windsor opened their season with a 7-0 win at home against West Hartford. Aubrie Mazur notched the win, striking out eleven. Tori Thomson, who tripled, and Chelsea Hebert led the South offense. Hannah Moller and Jackie Carter played well for West Hartford.
Coventry 5, Ashford 2. Coventry scored three runs in the 3rd inning to jump out to a 5-1 lead and held on for the victory against a feisty Ashford team. Maria Vromans, Emma Polinski and Taylor Lavallee each had two hits to lead the Coventry offense. For Ashford, Kylie Hill had two hits, including a monster double to left field. Ally Nolan also chipped in with a couple of hits. Colleen Ecsedy pitched a complete game, striking out ten and walking just two.
Tolland 2, Enfield 0.
Somers 15, Ellington 0.
Simsbury at Manchester - rescheduled to Friday, July 31st.
Glastonbury at Granby - postponed to a later date.
Monday, June 22nd
Ashford 4, Ellington 2. With a 4-0 lead in the top of the 7th, Ashford's lead was not a lock. Danielle Pare hit a hard shot to right field for a triple and drove in Grace Durgan and Kenzie Whiting. Ashford's Charlotte Kelleher played a great third base, making a key play for the last out. She also had key hits in the game. Sammy Ridzon made a great double play earlier in the game for Ashford. Colleen Ecsedy pitched very well for the win, recoding nine strikeouts.
Glastonbury 9, South Windsor 3. Visiting Glastonbury escaped South Windsor with a 9-3 win behind the pitching of Nikki Deskus, who struck out six and held South scoreless after the third inning. Amanda Bogue had two hits and three RBIs for the winners. For South Windsor, Anna Cerra hit well and catcher Stephanie Rahm did a great job behind the plate on a wet, slippery night.
Vernon 5, Tolland 3. Tolland jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with hits by Kim Tanguay and Samantha Olson. Although solid pitching was provided by Tolland, Vernon got its offense going, highlighted by the bat of Emily Jablonecki. Vernon slowly chipped away at the lead, which Tolland fought for until the last out of the game. Vernon's good defense helped the pitching combo of Courtney Oliva and Sarah Carpenter.
Coventry 7, Somers 0 (forfeit).
Granby at Manchester - rescheduled to Wednesday, August 5th.
Simsbury at West Hartford - rescheduled to Wednesday, July 8th.
Wednesday, June 24th
Enfield 3, Coventry 1. Cari Conley pitched a 4-hitter and earned the 3-1 win over Coventry. Cori DeLorge played well defensively and Katie Schienda led the hitters with a double. Josie LoRicco scattered six hits for Coventry. Maria Vromans caught a good game and Kaitlyn Morton had a two-base hit.
South Windsor 6, Granby 2. In a well-played game and the score tied 1-1 going into the 7th inning, the South Windsor bats came alive. Four hits in the inning, led by Michelle Scanlon, Chelsea Toce, Sami Sutay and Anna Cerra created five runs in the final frame. Steph Rahm (double) also played solid defense behind the plate and Aubrie Mazur was extremely efficient in pitching her second complete game in the young 2009 summer season. Granby played well, supported by Katie Walsh at 3rd base, making several good plays. Janelle Cummings and Katie Kelleher drove in Granby's two runs with solid hits.
Tolland 10, Ellington 0. Tolland got their bats working with Kim Tanguay hitting a double and driving in a run. Karen Duhamel had a solid game at first base and had two hits and Brittany DeCarli contributed with a hit, two stolen bases and a run scored. For Ellington, Joanna DiStefano had two hits, Mackenzie Whiting contributed a hit and a couple of pickoff plays from the catcher position. Kelly Remenick added to the offense with a nicely hit double.
Simsbury 6, Glastonbury 0. Pitching for Simsbury, shared by Jessie Rocha and Carly Willimas, resulted in striking out 14 batters and giving up four hits. Simbury hitting for the night was led by Cassie Rocha, Sarah Tully and Carly Williams. Haley Howard and Hailey Welcer had good games at the plate for Glastonbury.
Ashford 2, Somers 2 (tie, 10 innings).
Simsbury 6, Glastonbury 0.
Manchester at West Hartford - rescheduled to Thursday, June 25th.
Thursday, June 25th
West Hartford 6, Manchester 5. (from 6/24) West Hartford came from behind to defeat Manchester with a two-out rally in the 7th inning. With the score 5-4, Ali Stevens started things with her second hit of the game. Caelese Brown then ripped a single to centerfield, driving in the tieing run. Mallory Martucci ended it with a long double to left field to drive in Brown. Martucci had two hits and two RBI in the game. Charlotte Moller pitched the complete game for West Hartford, recording nine strikeouts. Katie Sirois pitched well for Manchester and led the offense with two hits. Shannon Klock anchored the defense with several nice plays at third.
Monday, June 29th
Simsbury 11, South Windsor 1. South Windsor's Shannon Martin threw a solid game, with offensive support from Nichole Slyvester, Anna Cerra and Kristina Wanat. Simsbury pitching by Alie Garry, Jessie Rocha and Carly Williams combined for eleven strikeouts. Leading the Simsbury offense were Christina Medico, Sarah Tully, Alie Garry and Carly Williams.
Manchester 9, Glastonbury 1. Manchester defeated a scrappy Glastonbury team 9-1. Allyson Fournier went the distance in the circle for Manchester, striking out fifteen. Fournier helped her cause with two base hits and two runs scored. Allie Vitkus and Lauren Mazzoni each had multiple hits for Manchester.
West Hartford 8, Granby 2. Mallory Martucci and Dani Stevens each had a single and a double to lead a 13-hit attack by West Hartford. Carrie Corrigan and Ali Stevens added long doubles as well. Caelese Brown made the defensive play of the game with a shoestring catch on the run and perfect throw to first base for the double play. Siena Bober had a 2-RBI double for Granby.
Vernon 13, Coventry 1. Vernon had solid defense and hitting throughout the order, which was led by Emily Jablonecki and Elissa Graf (triple). Coventry started strong with doubles by Maria Vromans and Josie LoRicco but Vernon slowly pulled away from a solid Coventry team.
Simsbury 11, South Windsor 1.

Wednesday, July 1st
Vernon 6, Ashford 5. This game was all about scoring for both teams until Colleen Ecsedy for Ashford and Courtney Oliva for Vernon entered the game as relief pitchers. The bottom of Vernon's batting order showed its strength with Alyssa McDonald hitting a triple and a double. Marissa Boyer highlighted Ashford's toughness from not only behind the plate, but also with the bat.
Simsbury 11, Granby 1. Granby's Neve Stearns pitched a good game and went two for two at the plate, with Bethany Grupp scoring on an RBI-single by Katie Kelleher. Simsbury pitchers Alie Garry, Jessie Rocha and Carly Williams shared the circle while Emily Forzono and Christina Medico shared behind the plate, both catching an excellant game. Offensively, Forzono and Rocha each scored twice.
Somers 2, Enfield 1.
South Windsor at Manchester - rescheduled to Thursday, July 30th.
Coventry at Ellington - rescheduled to Friday, July 31st.

Monday, July 6th
Simsbury 4, Manchester 0. Simsbury's Annie Graikowski pitched a shutout game, striking out sixteen batters, with Emily Forzono and Christina Medico both catching well. Offensively, Holly Miller and Sarah Tully each had two hits and Graikowski, Forzono and Medico scored all the runs with 5 hits between them. Allyson Fournier pitched well for Manchester, striking out eight batters.
South Windsor 11, West Hartford 2. South's Shannon Martin pitched a gem in West Hartford. She collected 15 Ks, walked two and allowed only one hit. The South Windsor hitting attack was led by Chelsea Hebert (triple), Chelsea Toce (double) and Tori Thomson with a double. West Hartford played hard after a tough first inning, with Val Beyer playing tremendous defense in the circle. Becky Hoisl's long triple was the lone hit for West Hartford. Ali Stevens also played well.
Vernon 2, Enfield 1. In an exciting, well fought battle, Katie Krogmann was the highlight of Enfield's offense with two hits. The game was locked down by each team's defense, especially at third base by Vernon's Elissa Graf and Enfield's Katie Shienda. Pitching duties for Vernon were shared by Courtney Oliva and Sarah Carpenter, Cari Conley pitching for Enfield. In the 6th inning, Conley hit a deep shot with two on and one out and Vernon's centerfielder, Jill Eitelman, ended the inning with a catch and throw for a putout at second.
Glastonbury 5, Granby 0. Nikki Deskus threw a one-hitter for the complete game win as Glastonbury blanked Granby. Minda Rivera slapped a key hit and Haylie Welcer banged out a hit to drive in two crucial runs. Katie Kelleher pitched five strong innings for Granby. Bethany Grupp played well at shortstop with five assists and Addie Koehler helped her out by digging out some balls at first base. Erin Walsh had the lone hit for Granby.

Wednesday, July 8th
Ashford 6, Enfield 5. Ashford won a narrow victory, with a tie game leading into the 6th inning until Sammy Ridzon broke the tie with a steal of home. Ashford's defense was led by Alyssa Varrieur, who had a great game at catcher, stopping a steal at second and catching a foul ball. Colleen Ecsedy pitched 6 1/3 strong innings with nine strikeouts. She was relieved by Taylor Holmes, who finished the game holding Enfield scoreless. Kate Levasseur had three hits for Enfield and Rebecca Scanlon made a great double play.
Glastonbury 5, South Windsor 4. Glastonbury edged South Windsor 5-4 as Nikki Deskus pitched a complete game and got the game winning hit in the bottom of the 7th inning. Brittany Clark played superb defense at 3rd base and Delaney Kehoe had two solid hits. South Windsor played a strong game led by Julie Landino's two RBIs, good hitting by Ashley Tremonte and fine pitching by Aubrie Mazur.
Manchester 5, Granby 1. Manchester evened its record at 2-2 with a hard fought victory over Granby. Katie Sirois pitched a solid game for Manchester, going the distance and getting the victory. Marissa Fenny was solid in her debut behind the plate for Manchester. Their offense was paced by Hazel Sousa, who had a key 2-out RBI-single that gave Manchester a cushion going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Katie Kelleher pitched well in defeat for Granby, striking out ten Manchester hitters. Kelsey Walsh had two hits for Granby and Chloe Frechette scored the lone run.
Simsbury 3, West Hartford 1 (1st game). Simsbury pitchers Alie Garry and Jessie Rocha struck out 15 batters and allowed just three hits. Nikki Byer and Holly Miller led with hits for Simsbury, with Emily Forzono scoring twice. West Hartford's offense was led by Marisa Taddei, Dani Stevens and Charlotte Moller.
Simsbury 9, West Hartford 2 (2nd game). (from 6/22) Jessie Rocha and Alie Garry pitched well for Simsbury, ending up with ten strikeouts. Offensively, Carly Williams had 4 RBIs, including a bases-loaded triple, and Cassie Rocha, Christina Medico and Alie Garry all scored twice for Simsbury. Strong hitters for West Hartford were Mallory Martucci (triple), Jackie Carter, Ali Stevens and Jessica Dufault.
Vernon 6, Ellington 0.
Tolland 6, Somers 3.
Monday, July 13th
Enfield 8, Tolland 6. The Enfield Fireballs battled Tolland in a back and forth game that ended with Enfield on top 8-6. Tolland took the lead first and had a 5-0 advantage after 4 innings. In the top of the 5th, the Enfield bats came alive and delivered six runs, led by a 2-run double by Jen Arnone and hits by Nicole (Shorty) Meunier and Kate Schienda. After Tolland tied the score in the 6th, Enfield retook the lead in the 7th with two runs. For Tolland, Brittany DeCarli, Rebecca Tourtellotte and Samantha Lord performed well at the plate.
Ashford 4, Coventry 2. Ashford edged Coventry 4-2, led defensively by pitchers Sammy Ridzon and Taylor Holmes. Charlotte Kelleher made several key plays at shortstop and Emma Perugini played a great right field, catching several fly balls. Kelleher also had two key bunts and Colleen Ecsedy drove in two runs with a shot to right field. Coventry's Emma Polinski pitched a solid game with nine strikeouts. Kaitlin Morton played a strong shortstop and had two nice hits, and Angela Barrette had a key hit to drive in one of Coventry's runs.
West Hartford 8, Manchester 2. West Hartford defeated Manchester 8-2 behind the 2-hit pitching of Val Beyer. Brianne Callan powered the offense with two hits and two RBI. Zoe Mendal, Mallory Martucci and Marisa Taddei also had two hits apiece. Ashleigh Welshman and Marissa Fenny did a terrific job sharing the catching duties for Manchester.
South Windsor 15, Granby 0. South Windsor blanked Granby behind Shannon Martin's 2-hit pitching and her two hits at the plate. The South offense was led by Sara Bisighini (2 triples), Tori Thomson, Michelle Scanlon, Ashley Tremonte and Aubrie Mazur with two hits each. Granby's top hitter was Erin Walsh with two hits.
Simsbury 10, Glastonbury 3. Glastonbury held a 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning, but Simsbury's Olivia Egan started a 6th inning rally, followed by Holly Miller's bunt single and Cassie Rocha's 3-run triple to take the lead. Other hitters included Annie Graikoski, Carly Williams, Sara Tully and Nikki Byer. Graikoski pitched a great game for Simsbury, recording thirteen strikeouts. Glastonbury's offense was led by Hayley Howard, Cassie Longo, Halie Welcer and Nicki Deskus.

Wednesday, July 15th
Coventry 8, Somers 4. Coventry scored five runs in the 4th inning to break open a close game. Emma Polinski singled and Josie LoRicco doubled to spark the 4th inning rally. Jaime Harvey and Mariah Francis each contributed with singles. Winning pitcher Emma Polinski struck out nine. Shelby LaDue (homerun), Hailee Stetson (triple) and Kayla Renaud (single) led the Somers offense.
Ellington 5, Ashford 4. Mackenzie Whiting caught a great game and doubled in Grace Durgan with the deciding run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Rachel Tshonas struck out eleven and hit a single. Dani Wrubel and Rachel Gagnon both hit doubles for Ashford.
Manchester 6, Glastonbury 1. Ally Fournier pitched a no-hitter, leading Manchester to a 6-1 win over Glastonbury. The only run scored on a walk, stolen base, passed ball and a fielder's choice. After being down 1-0 in the 5th inning, Manchester rallied for six runs on the timely hitting of Lauren Mazzoni, Erin Butler and Sarah Bonino. For Glastonbury, Nicole Deskus pitched well and was backed up on defense by a solid infield led by Brittney Clark.
West Hartford 4, Granby 3. Dani Stevens' second hit of the game, a 2-run double, highlighted a 3-run 7th inning that led West Hartford past Granby. Ali Stevens also had two hits in the game, while Jackie Carter and Caelese Brown had one each. Jessica Dufault pitched well for West Hartford with relief help from Val Beyer in the 7th inning. Erin Walsh pitched a terrific game for Granby, striking out 11 batters, and also had three hits and two runs scored on offense.
Simsbury 2, South Windsor 0. Jessie Rocha threw a shutout against South Windsor, with Cassie Rocha performing well behind the plate. Christina Medico, Nikki Byer and Olivia Egan had strong defensive games for Simsbury. Shannon Martin pitched a good game for South Windsor, striking out seven batters.

Wednesday, July 22th
Enfield 8, Ellington 7. With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Ellington had the tieing run on third and the winning run on second but was unable to capture the victory in a very close, exciting game. For Enfield, Jen Arnone and Ashley Reid reached base in all four of their at bats. Nichole Meunier had two base hits and Cari Conley pitched well, striking out six and walking onlt one. For Ellington, Emily Fillion had two hits and was a great pinch runner. Christina DiStefano had two hits and scored two runs. Mackenzie Whiting sent the ball to the fence on all four of her at bats with three doubles and a single.
South Windsor 6, West Hartford 5. In a well played game, South Windsor held on to beat West Hartford 6-5. West Hartford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd inning, with Marisa Taddei slashing a long double that drove in two runs. Jackie Carter drove her in with a clutch single. South Windsor chipped away in the bottom of the 3rd inning with Sami Sutay lining a 2-run double. Still down by two in the 5th inning, South's Steph Rahm delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to score two runners. Shannon Martin pitched well in relief and was able to close out the victory with four strong innings, while not allowing an earned run. West Hartford's Caelese Brown, Val Beyer & South's Chelsea Hebert, Julie Landino and Nicole Sylvester played well.
Manchester 11, Somers 2. Manchester was led by the pitching of Katie Sirois and Allie Vitkus and the catching of Marissa Fenny (who also had a timely run-scoring base hit). Clutch hitting by Erin Butler, Katie Sirois and Lauren Mazzoni also led Manchester. For Somers, Shelby LaDue and Hailee Stetson led the offense. Defensively, Somers made a number of outstanding plays, including the defensive play of the game by Kim Meunier, who robbed Manchester's Ashleigh Welchman of an extra base hit.
Granby 6, Glastonbury 5. In a back and forth battle, Granby earned its first win of the season by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, after being down to their last strike. Katie Jones had a base hit to tie the game and scored the winning run. Katie Kelleher (Granby) and Nikki Deskus (Glastonbury) both pitched well, with Katie Marchetti being the defensive player of the game.

Friday, July 24th
Manchester 2, South Windsor 0. Manchester bested South Windsor 2-0 in a well-played, well-pitched game by both teams. Manchester was led by Allyson Fournier, who went the distance pitching to earn the win. The Manchester offense was paced by Erin Butler, with two hits, and Allie Vitkus, who scored both Manchester runs. South Windsor was led by Shannon Martin, who pitched well; Ashley Tremonte, who played solid defense; and Tori Thomson, who chipped in with a single.

Thursday, July 30th
Manchester 7, South Windsor 6. (from 7/1) Manchester staged a late rally to defeat South Windsor 7-6. Manchester trailed 6-0 going into the bottom of the 6th inning but scratched two runs across to make it interesting. They then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the 7th inning for the victory. The 7th inning rally was led by Allie Vitkus and Katie Sirois, who both hit long doubles. The comeback was completed with Emily Koehler's steal of home with two outs. South Windsor was led by Kristina Wanat, who had 4 hits and 3 runs scored, Aubrie Mazur, who had 4 hits, and Julie Landino.

Monday, August 3rd
Simsbury 3, Enfield 0. Annie Graikoski pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 16 batters and giving up only one hit. Emily Forzono caught a good game. Carly Williams had two RBIs and scored a run. Cassie Rocha had a hit and an RBI. Christina Medico (2 hits) and Annie Graikoski (1 hit) scored the other two Simsbury runs. Cari Conley pitched well for Enfield and Katie Krogmann had a nice hit.
Ellington 7, Granby 6. Danielle Pare had two singles and a double and scored two runs, including the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Mackenzie Whiting reached base twice and played well behind the plate. For Granby, Bethany Grupp and Chloe Frechette reached base twice and score two runs.
Ashford 5, Vernon 4. (from 7/27) In another close game between Ashford and Vernon, Ashford came out on top 5-4. Ashford's defense was led by Taylor Holmes, who pitched four solid innings and allowed only one run. Ashford's offense was solid with doubles by Marissa Boyer and Dani Wrubel. Vernon's Jillian Eitelman hit a double in the top of the 7th inning followed by a triple by Jennie Mears shortly thereafter to make it a very close game.
South Windsor 6, Glastonbury 4. (from 7/27) South Windsor outlasted Glastonbury 6-4 in a well-played game by both teams. South scored two quick runs in the 1st inning. Michelle Scanlon and Shannon Martin had consecutive hits and were driven in on a sacrifice fly by Tori Thomson and an infield hit by Steph Rahm. Glastonbury kept the game close behind the hitting of Nikki Phillips. South's Shannon Martin pitched a complete game while garnering 11Ks. Julie Landino played well, with Alyson Stearns & Katie Strong adding much needed help from the U-14 team. Glastonbury's Nicole Deskus came in and pitched two excellant innings in relief to tame South's bats.
West Hartford 10, Coventry 0.
Tuesday, August 4th
South Windsor 5, Manchester 4. (from 7/20) South's first batter, Michelle Scanlon, scored the first run in the first inning of this classic softball battle, but it took Erin O'Brien's one-out safety squeeze in the bottom of the 9th inning to put an end to this game. South's Shannon Martin pitched all nine innings, collecting 13 strikeouts. Allyson Fournier (18 Ks) also pitched nine innings in a pitching duel that was deadlocked 1-1 after seven innings. Manchester then exploded for three runs in the 8th inning, highlighted by Hazel Sousa's (3 hits) line drive single. Not to be outdone, South's Tori Thomson (2 doubles) drove in two with a double in the bottom of the 8th. South Windsor and Manchester's last two games have come down to walkoff plays by their last batter, with each team getting a win.

West Hartford 9, Glastonbury 2. (from 7/1) Val Beyer pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead West Hartford. The offense was provided by Jackie Carter (3 hits, 2 RBI), Caelese Brown (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Mallory Martucci (single, double). Hannah Moller played outstanding defensively.
Simsbury 7, Tolland 1. (from 7/27) Jessie Rocha pitched a good game, allowing just one run. She allowed 5 hits and issued no walks. Emily Forzono caught a good game. The offense was led by Carly Williams, (2 triples, 3 RBI), Emma Gailey (2 RBI) and Olivia Egan (2 runs scored). For Tolland, Alyssa Yavis had two hits. Samantha Olson had two hits, two stolen bases, and played a great defensive game at second base. Brittany DeCarli contributed with a hit, two stolen bases, a run scored, and a great defensive effort.
