- CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (3:30PM)
East Hartford 2, Suffield 0. In one of the most closely matched and well-played tournament finals to date, East Hartford, the #3 seed, edged Suffield, the #1 seed, by a score of 2-0. Suffield got out of the gate quickly in the bottom of the first inning by loading the bases with none out, but failed to push a run accross. Taylor Bartini led off with a single, Whitney Mackay dropped a great bunt base hit and Michele Niejadlik followed with an infield hit. Clean-up hitter Emily Droney, who was impeccable behind the plate for the entire game, hit a linedrive shot to left centerfield that was caught by Sarah D'Attilio, who then doubled Mackay off at second base. Winning pitcher Heather Trinks (who scattered 9 hits, walked none & struck out 4) induced Sam Cieri to fly out to center and East Hartford escaped unscathed.
In the top of the 2nd inning, Lynne Foran singled to left center with one out. Sarah D'Attilio (who would have three hits, score the first run and drive in the second) followed with a single to right centerfield, but a great throw from Sam Cieri erased Foran attempting to advance to third base. East Hartford again threatened in the third inning, when Marchary Davis reached on a bunt single, stole second and third, but was thrown out the plate on a contact play ground ball to the shortstop.
Suffield had another opportunity in their half of the third inning, with a runner reaching on a dropped third strike, East Hartford's only error, and singles by Julie Muscarella and Taylor Bartini, the 2nd of her three hits. With two outs and the bases full, Whitney Mackay hit a line shot right a shortstop Abby Rodriguez and the Banshees again avoided damage. The fourth inning was quiet for both teams, but the fifth saw East break through. Sarah D'Attilio led off with an infield single down the 3rd base line, stole second base on a pitch in the dirt and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Kennedy. With one out, Marchary Davis fouled a pitch high to right field that was caught for the out but scored D'Attilio from third to give the Banshees a 1-0 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Suffield got a two-out single from Kaleigh Peterson, who stole second to get into scoring position. East pitcher Heather Trinks then cleanly fielded a bunt attempt and threw to first to end the inning.
In the sixth inning, Suffield again got the leadoff hitter on base, with Lauren Mercik singling to left field. Amber Nadeau attempted to bunt, but popped the ball foul right to catcher Lisa Donato, who quickly threw to first and doubled off Mercik. But Suffield refused to quit, as Julie Muscarella singled for her second hit of the game followed by Taylor Bartini's third hit. With two out and two on, Whitney Mackay hit the ball hard up the middle, but Trinks stabbed it and threw to first for the third out. The Banshees scored an insurance run in the 7th when they sent seven batters to the plate, the most by either team in a half-inning. Jenna Allison scored on a single by Sarah D'Attilio. The Suffield hitters were retired in order in the bottom of the 7th and East Hartford celebrated a 2-0 victory. The game was well played by both teams, each making big defensive plays. East Hartford made one error and converted two double plays and Suffield committed two errors. Angie Moskwa took the hard luck loss, allowing eight hits and no walks, striking out four.
